Rockville is Once Again Named a ‘Bicycle Friendly Community’

Mayor to Accept Award on Bike to Work Day on Friday

Rockville, Maryland, May 19 – The League of American Bicyclists has recognized the City of Rockville’s efforts to encourage bicycling as a sustainable, healthy, and equitable mode of transportation by reaffirming the city’s status as a “Bicycle Friendly Community.”

Mayor Bridget Donnell Newton will accept an award recognizing the city’s bicycle-friendly designation during a presentation at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, May 20 in front of Dawson’s Market, 255 N. Washington St.

The Rockville Town Square location is one of the city’s two Bike to Work Day pit stops. The other is in the Fallsgrove Village Center parking lot, in front of Smoothie King, at 14941 Shady Grove Road. Three hundred sixty-five people have registered to stop by one of the two stops on their way to work or school. Stop by for a free light breakfast, coffee and a free T-shirt and enter a raffle for prizes, including a new bicycle. Learn more and register at http://www.biketoworkmetrodc.org and use #btwd2016 on social media.

The Bicycle Friendly Community designation, which lasts through 2020, recognizes the city’s commitment to promoting bicycling for all community members through education, infrastructure, and outreach. There are 35 miles of shared-use paths, 4 miles of bike lanes and 3 miles of roads with sharrows within Rockville. The Rockville Bicycle Advisory Committee (RBAC) meets monthly and represents a broad range of bicycling interests. Learn more about RBAC at www.rockvillemd.gov/rbac.
