Rockville Celebrates National Farmers Market Week

The City’s Saturday Market Offers Seasonal Produce Through Nov. 19

Rockville, Md., Aug. 8 – The Rockville Farmers Market offers healthy food choices and “a festive open-air setting, which enhances community spirit and civic pride by offering a natural place for community gathering,” the Mayor and Council said in a proclamation declaring Aug. 7-13 as National Farmers Week in Rockville.

Now in its 26th year, the Rockville Farmers Market features only regional growers and producers, with everything grown or produced by market vendors. It is open 9 a.m.-1 p.m. every Saturday through Nov. 19 in the parking lot at the corner of Route 28 (E. Jefferson Street) and Monroe Street in Rockville Town Center.

The market’s midsummer offerings include corn, peaches, tomatoes, watermelon and other fruits and vegetables. The market also offers baked goods, flowers, knife sharpening and – new this year – local beers, pickled veggies and soaps.

The city’s YouTube channel includes interview segments with Leroy Tracey, owner of Mountain Valley Orchard in Smithsburg, one of the market’s featured farms, discussing what’s in season and the benefits of buying local produce. Visit www.rockvillemd.gov/youtube and search “Farmers Market.”

Find video of the National Farmers Market Week proclamation presentation at https://youtu.be/fOOgj6jdI7w and read the complete proclamation by selecting the July 18 Mayor and Council meeting agenda at www.rockvillemd.gov/AgendaCenter.

The Rockville Farmers Market participates in the Maryland Market Money Program, which offers an incentive for participants in the federal Farmers Market Nutrition Program, Fruit and Vegetable Check Program and Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program to spend their benefits at the farmers market. Participants’ benefits are matched up to $5 per market visit while funds are available. Organizations or individuals wishing to contribute to the Maryland Market Money program should email specialevents@rockvillemd.gov.

Visit www.rockvillemd.gov/farmers for more information, including a list of participating vendors, approximate harvest dates for select fruits and vegetables, and a photo gallery.
