Man Arrested for Attempted Armed Robbery, Assaults and Burglary

The Subject Assaulted Residents After Entering Two Homes

Rockville, Maryland, Oct. 25 – A man was arrested after he threatened an elderly woman with a knife while attempting to rob a home and assaulted another homeowner who encountered the man in another home on Monday.

Officers from the Rockville City Police Department (RCPD) responded at about 2 p.m. on Monday to the 400 block of North Horners Lane for the report of a robbery.

An elderly woman explained through a translator that she confronted a man, who was known to her, going through the drawers in her bedroom. The man retrieved a kitchen knife with a 4-inch blade and held it to the woman’s throat. Another family member intervened and the suspect fled on foot. Officers from RCPD, Montgomery County Police and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office arrived and issued a lookout for the subject.

A short time later, a homeowner reported a burglary in progress only a few blocks away in the 700 block of Robert Road. The homeowner said a man had entered his home via an unlocked window. The homeowner confronted the man and a scuffle ensued. The man stole cash from a desk and fled. Officers arrived and issued a second lookout.

A short time later, a sheriff’s deputy saw a man in the parking lot of the Burgundy Park Shopping Center, at First Street and Baltimore Road, who matched the description in the lookout. The man was stopped and positively identified by both victims.

Mohammed Soumah, 30, of no fixed address, is charged with attempted armed robbery, first-degree assault, first-degree burglary and first- and second-degree assault. He is being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center on $10,000 bond.

Anyone with information about this incident or this individual is asked to call the RCPD Criminal Investigations Unit at 240-314-8938. Callers may choose to remain anonymous.
