IT Upgrades Mean Communication Outages at Rockville Facilities on Nov. 4-6

Telephone, Internet and Wi-Fi to Be Affected at City Government Facilities

Rockville, Maryland, Oct. 31 – Work to upgrade the city’s communication network will shut down telephone, internet and Wi-Fi systems at city facilities beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4 and continuing through Sunday, Nov. 6.

The outage will affect the communication network for city government facilities only. Telephone, internet and Wi-Fi will be restored at affected city facilities by the opening of business on Monday, Nov. 7.

Call 911 for emergencies. For non-emergencies, call the Rockville City Police Department (RCPD) non-emergency number, 240-314-8900. All other RCPD telephone numbers will be operational. Emergencies involving city water, sewer and streets should be reported to the police non-emergency number during the outage.

Portions of the city’s website (www.rockvillemd.gov), such as documents, maps and other online services provided by the city, will not be available. Rockville 11 (channel 11 on county cable systems) will broadcast as usual, with on-demand content available at www.rockvillemd.gov/videoondemand. Internet streaming of Rockville 11 will not be available.

During the outage, telephone, internet and Wi-Fi will not be available at:

  • City Hall.
  • Croydon Creek Nature Center.
  • Glenview Mansion and the Cottage at Glenview Mansion.
  • F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre and Social Hall. The theater’s ticketing system will be operational. Tickets are available at https://fscottfitzgerald.showare.com/.
  • Lincoln Park, Thomas Farm and Twinbrook community centers.
  • Rockville Senior Center.
  • Rockville Swim and Fitness Center.

Online permitting will not be available. The recreation registration system also will be unavailable. Electronic credit card transactions will not be available at city facilities.

Internet will be available through computers in computer labs at community centers that have them.

Elwood Smith and Montrose community centers, the Pump House and the Rockcrest Ballet Center will not be affected by the outages.

In the coming weeks, upgrades at individual city facilities will necessitate communication network interruptions of a day or less, at those facilities.

The upgrades are to meet the increasing demand on the city’s information technology infrastructure, with the goal of increasing IT performance, business agility and operational efficiency.
