About the Commission
The Environment Commission is a nine-member body of Rockville residents with backgrounds in science, the environment and education. Members serve without compensation for terms of three years from the date of appointment and may be appointed to succeeding terms. Vacancies occurring prior to the expiration of the term of a member shall be filled for the unexpired portion of the term by appointment of the Mayor and confirmed by the Council. One member of the Commission shall be appointed chairperson by the Mayor, subject to confirmation by the Council, to serve for a term of one year and thereafter until a successor takes office.

The purpose of the Commission is to recommend policies and programs to the Mayor and Council and City staff relating to the environment and sustainability; core to this mission is promoting a sustainable community through initiatives relating to natural resource management development, energy efficiency, watershed stewardship and protection, pollution prevention and public education. The Commission also provides feedback and recommendations regarding areas for improvement of the City's environmental programs and performance as requested by the Mayor and Council and maintains a list of expert contacts in the local community who can be utilized to advise the City on topics related to the environment as they arise.

Applications of interest are accepted on a rolling basis. Contact the City Clerk/Director of Council Operations' Office for more information on how to join.  Applications are kept on file for a year, and applicants will be notified of any future vacancies on the commission. The Environment Commission encourages all prospective applicants to consider participating on one of the Commission's committees- these groups assist the Commission in gathering and analyzing information and writing policy statements, and form a preferential pool of candidates for Commission vacancies.  Email if you would like more information on volunteering for one of these groups.

To better fulfill the role of the commission, committees were created in Watersheds, Energy, and Climate Action. These groups meet independently of the full commission and work to achieve goals in each of the project areas. The commission invites all interested individuals who live, work or play in Rockville to participate in any or all of the following committees. For more information and meeting location Email or call 240-314-8870.

  • Watersheds Committee meets the first Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m.*
  • Energy Committee meets the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m.*
  • Climate Action Committee meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.*
