City’s ‘Single-Stream’ Recycling Program Underway
Residents No Longer Required to Separate Paper, Cardboard, Plastics, and Metals

ROCKVILLE, Md., July 3, 2008 — Effective immediately, residents who receive Rockville refuse service no longer need to sort recyclables.  Residents must now place all materials approved for recycling – which includes mixed paper, cardboard, glass bottles, aluminum cans and plastics – into the blue recycling bin.  Materials that do not fit into the blue bin can be placed in paper bags.

The City of Rockville is now taking its recyclables to a new contractor, allowing single stream service to begin immediately.  Rockville is expected to receive estimated FY 2009 revenue of $235,000 for recycling materials.

Rockville will be implementing a new refuse and recycling program within the next 18 months.  As part of the program, residents will be provided wheeled carts to handle single-stream recyclables and refuse.  The City believes the implementation of this new program will increase the recycling rate.

Rockville’s previous recycling system required that residents separate paper and cardboard from glass, aluminum and plastic.  Recycling is collected once each week.  For questions, please contact Refuse and Recycling at 240-314-8568.
