Did You Know?

  • Every year the United States disposes of 24 million tons of leaves and grass clippings, which could be composted to conserve landfill space?
  • Composting can easily reduce by half the volume of material a household sends to a landfill?
  • Each year do-it-yourselfers improperly dump more oil than the Exxon Valdez spilled? Motor oil must never be dumped in storm drains. Storm drains flow untreated into rivers, lakes, or oceans. One quart of oil can kill fish in thousands of gallons of water. Call the City at 240-314-8568 between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, to arrange for a free collection or call a local quick-lube shop and auto store to see if they take oil.
  • Recycling aluminum saves about 95 percent of all the energy it would take to produce aluminum from its original source, bauxite ore?
  • Recycling one aluminum can saves enough electricity to run a TV for three hours?
  • Producing paper from recycled paper reduces air and water pollution by 50 percent?
  • The United States generates about 208 million tons of municipal solid waste a year? That's 4.3 pounds per person per day!

Besides recycling, here are some other things
you can do to help our environment…

  • Use products with a high recycled content, even if they cost a little more
  • Reduce the volume of packaging you buy, reuse what you can, and recycle the rest
  • When purchasing just one or two items, tell the clerk you don't need a bag
  • Use your own reusable canvas bag at the grocery store
  • Buy quality products and keep them for a lifetime
