Design Charrette

What is a Charrette?

The French word “charrette” means “cart” and is often used to describe
concentrated work effort expended by art and architecture students to meet a project deadline.
This use of the term is said to originate from the École des Beaux Arts in Paris during the 19th century, where proctors circulated a cart, or “charrette,” to collect drawings from the students.

Rockville’s Pike: Envisioning a Great Place Process
Third Report to the Community - Results of the Design Charrette

Can you imagine a world where you do not try to avoid going to the Pike, but instead say: "Let's go to the Pike" because you look forward to going there?

Approximately 500 citizens come to all of the public meetings, including 135 who came to the kickoff of the charrette and the charrette results meetings. We heard during the planning process that Rockville Pike should be greener, be walking and biking accessible, have better traffic patterns, have public gathering places and have attractive storefronts. The charrette team worked hard to implement this vision.

The June 3rd meeting presented the results of the May 31 – June 3 Design Charrette for the Rockville Pike planning process.  After the mayor’s welcome, the consultant team provided the transportation and land use concepts that emerged from this endeavor. Rockville citizens, business owners, employees working on the Pike, as well as representatives from the State Highway Administration (which owns the Pike), Montgomery County Park and Planning, and Ride-On came to the design studio during the charrette to tell us what is believed will make Rockville Pike a Great Place.

At the end of the charrette, the public had an opportunity to see the result of their comments. The next step will be to see how appropriate zoning can support the vision and those ideas will be presented at a future meeting. The goal is to produce a draft plan, which would go to the Planning Commission and then the Mayor and Council. As always, thank you so much for participating and for your continuing interest.
