College Gardens Fourth-Grader to Be Rockville’s ‘Mayor for a Day’

Rockville, Maryland, June 2 — If he were mayor, Mithran Karthic would make sure no one feels left out.

Karthic, a fourth-grader in Pamela Pierpoint’s class at College Gardens Elementary School in Rockville, will get to see what it’s like to be mayor when he serves as the city’s honorary “Mayor for a Day” on Monday, June 6. He earned the honor after his essay was selected by Mayor Bridget Donnell Newton as the city’s winner of the “If I Were Mayor, I Would …” essay contest sponsored by the Maryland Municipal League and the Maryland Mayors’ Association.

On his day as mayor, Mithran will tour City Hall, the Rockville 11 television studios, the Rockville City Police Department and Croydon Creek Nature Center, and have lunch with Mayor Newton. Members of the media are invited to interview and photograph the “mini-mayor” at work on June 6. To arrange to do so, contact Assistant Director of Communication Sean Sedam at ssedam@rockvillemd.gov.

The essay contest, with the theme of “Celebrating the Soul of Maryland,” asked students to create a slogan that says what their hometown is all about. Mithran suggested the slogan “Where the change begins.”

“They are making changes EVERYWHERE in Rockville!” he wrote. “I would do the same thing and make sure NO ONE feels left out!” That includes organizing special events “which will help people understand and celebrate” people like police officers, military and firefighters who keep the community safe, Mithran wrote.

Mithran took part in the city’s longest-running special event on Monday when he rode in Rockville’s 78th Annual Memorial Day Parade.

In addition to his day as mayor, Mithran will be recognized at the Mayor and Council meeting that begins at 7 p.m. Monday, June 6. Find the meeting agenda, including information about how to watch, at www.rockvillemd.gov/AgendaCenter.
