  4. Books that Shaped America: Moby-Dick by Herman Melville

    October 17, 2022, 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

The Library of Congress selected 88 books in June 2012 that helped shape America. Together we will take time to explore and discuss the significant of these works then and now. Each of us brings our own unique experiences to the exchange of ideas. Please find the work in the form that best suits your needs. Reading the book is optional. Presented by Joan Adams. MOBY-DICK: This 1851 novel is a powerful sea story released at the time when whaling was one of the most important industries in the country. The work is often described as a romanticized travelogue, a poetic epic, or a novel of symbolism. It doesn't matter how it is described- this work has stood the test of time. The universal truths and psychological insight packaged in a swift moving story that is full of suspense makes it just as important today as it was in 1851. How has Melville's style and use of narrative made this so noteworthy? Course 23858
