The Rockville City Police Department, a progressive, professional, and nationally accredited law enforcement agency, is recruiting highly motivated male and female entry-level and lateral/certified police officer applicants for police academy training sessions.

Rockville police officers perform routine law enforcement duties, including a variety of general and support assignments. Work is often performed under emergency conditions and frequently involves personal hazard.

The department provides law enforcement services to approximately 70,000 residents in coordination with the Montgomery County Police Department. Officers respond to calls for service and utilize partnerships to address safety and quality-of-life concerns in all city neighborhoods.

Salary

The FY 2026 pay scale for all sworn police officer positions is effective as of July 1, 2025. Pay for lateral/certified police officers is determined by the chief of police based on prior years of experience.

Eligibility

To be considered for employment as a police officer, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent legal resident of the United States who is an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces and has applied for U.S. citizenship, with the application pending approval.
  • Possess at least a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) certificate recognized by the State of Maryland.
  • Be at least 21 years old at the time of your graduation from the police academy.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Pass a written police examination.
  • Demonstrate good moral character and successfully pass an in-depth background investigation, which includes a medical examination, drug screening, polygraph examination, and psychological screening.
  • Meet and maintain the minimum requirements of the Maryland Police Training Commission.

Disqualifications

Applicants may be disqualified at any stage of the hiring process for any of the following reasons. This list is not all-inclusive:

  • Poor work history.
  • Poor driving record.
  • Felony conviction or a misdemeanor conviction carrying a sentence of imprisonment for one year.
  • Illegal drug use, purchase, sale, or distribution.
  • Falsification of application documents.
  • Inability to meet COMAR requirements set forth in the selection process.
  • Any other disqualifying factors as determined by the chief of police.

Hiring Process

Complete the Online Application

Recruitment for entry-level and lateral/certified police officers is ongoing. Applications must be fully completed and submitted by the posted online closing date.

Written Examination for Entry-Level Applicants

After completing the online application, selected entry-level applicants will be notified of the date and time for the written examination. On the day of the exam, you must bring a valid state driver’s license. A passing score is 70% or higher.

Physical Agility Test

All applicants must complete a standard physical agility test. A minimum passing score in each category is required to pass.

Requirements:

  • 1.5-mile run with a maximum time of 15 minutes, 20 seconds.
  • 18 push-ups in one minute.
  • 27 sit-ups in one minute.
  • Climb over a barrier.
  • Pull or drag a 150-pound rescue doll at least 15 feet.
  • Run a distance of at least 300 feet.
  • Traverse up and down at least two flights of steps.

Interview and Background Check

Selected candidates will be invited to interview with a selection panel and must undergo a comprehensive background check.

Screenings

Applicants must undergo a medical examination, drug screening, polygraph examination, and psychological screening. Each screening will be scheduled separately.

Interview with the Chief of Police

The final step in the hiring process is an interview with the chief of police.

Offer of Employment

A contingent offer of employment will be extended upon successful completion of employment testing, which includes the medical and physical screenings, drug screening, polygraph examination, and psychological screening.

Training and Probationary Period

The police officer position has a 12-month probationary period, starting from the date of successful completion of all mandated police training. Training includes:

Entry-Level Police Officers:

  • Maryland Entry-Level Police Training Academy
  • 14-week Field Training Program

Lateral/Certified Police Officers:

  • 4-week Comparative Compliance Training Academy (Out-of-state laterals only)
  • 80-hour Field Training Program
